Crossing Boundaries, Bridging Worlds

Program Overview and Itinerary

Join instructors from the Department of Geography & Geology and the Environmental Studies Program for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain diverse cultural perspectives while exploring some of today’s most pressing questions.

The Europe Field Studies program will explore place, identity, change, and sustainability from the unique urban, historical, and environmental contexts of Munich, Venice and Rome. Following an overall program theme of “Crossing Boundaries, Bridging Worlds,” we will consider the contemporary urban landscapes of these cities, while visiting fascinating and complex cityscapes, and considering how their respective pasts orient them to an equitable, resilient and sustainable future. Starting in Munich, and travelling by rail to Venice and Rome, from the perspectives of a geographer and an urban planner, we will explore urban neighbourhoods, museums, memorials, and places of cultural, historical and environmental significance across Germany and Italy.

Earn university-transferable credits while you travel

The European Field Studies program is being offered as a six-credit program:
  • GEOG 1105: Geographic Field Techniques (3 university-transfer credits)
  • GEOG 1195: Special Topics: Resilient Sustainable Cities in Europe (3 university-transfer credits)
Total: 6 university-transfer credits

Itinerary 2026

Our journey begins in Munich, but .... All roads lead to Rome!

Get ready to learn in three unique European cities with deep and rich histories, vibrant cultures, and striking contrasts to Vancouver. Activities will include instructor-led lectures, walking tours and guest lectures from local experts, visits to museums, memorials, and other sites of significance.
  • Apr. 27-May 1: Pre-departure: orientation and lectures at Langara, 6 hours/day (mandatory).
  • May 10-16: Munich, Germany: deeply explore the historical, cultural and environmental issues embedded in this lovely Bavarian city, and explore its complicated contrasts and connections to Rome and Venice.
  • May 17: Experience Europe’s impressive and sustainable train system, when you travel by rail from Bavaria, through the spectacular Alps, to the unique city of Venice.
  • May 17-22: Explore beautiful, spectacular Venice, where east meets west. Venice is a one-of-a-kind UNESCO World Heritage Site, a fully walkable city, with unique art, architecture and ecosystems that are under threat from rising sea levels.
  • May 22: Travel by rail through the heart of Italy to Rome.
  • May 22-29: Rome: the Eternal City becomes our classroom for 7 days! We will visit sites in the ancient and modern city. Walk through unique neighbourhoods like Mussolini’s EUR, see the Foro Italico, stroll along the legendary Tiber River, and explore how ancient sites, the legacies of colonialism, global tourism, and climate change impact and shape the city today.
  • May 29: Program conclusion: return to Canada or embark on independent journeys in Italy and/or Europe.
* Itinerary subject to change.
