Itinerary

Pre-Departure Lecture/Orientation at Langara College (Mandatory): May 6 to 17, 2019 (2 weeks)

Tokyo, Mito, Kyoto, and Koyasan: May 20 to June 10, 2019 (3 weeks)

Tokyo:Visit old downtown (Asakusa, Ueno), Edo-Tokyo Museum,Tsukiji Fish Market, visit Meiji-Jingu shrine, day trip to Kamakura, various cultural activities, and free time on weekends.

Mito:Visit the police station, fish market, local high school, kindergarten, nursing home, factory and small businesses, socialize with Japanese university students, and much more!

Kyoto:Visit major temples and shrines (Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, Yasaka Shrine, etc.), participate in a tea ceremony and Zen workshop, see traditional performing arts at Gion, various cultural activities, and free time on weekends.

Experience Japanese History, Religion, Culture, and Society

  • May 20 to June 10, 2019: Japan - Tokyo, Mito (Ibaragi), Kyoto, and Koyasan
  • Program Fee: $3600.00
  • This field studies is equivalent to 9 university transferable course credits

Credit courses:
ASIA 1120 (3 credits) Religions of the East
An introduction to the study of the origins, ideas, practices, and evolution of Hinduism, Buddhism (including Zen), Daoism, Confucianism, and Shinto.

ASIA 1135 (3 credits) Introduction to East Asia (Japan)
Geographical, cultural and historical background of Japan. Ideological, social and political aspects of Japan's development placed in historical context.

ASIA 2115 (3 credits)  Japanese Society and Culture
A survey of modern Japanese life with special attention given to social organization and cultural patterns and behaviour. Topics include family, education, gender and ethnic relations, class and other inequalities, and the influence of globalization.

This is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel and study in Japan!  You will visit major Japanese cities (Tokyo, Kamakura, Kyoto, and Mito) and experience traditional and contemporary Japanese history, reigion, culture, and society.

Students from other post-secondary institutions are welcome! All courses are University Transferable.
