It has been almost two months since I started my study abroad semester; wow, it has flown by! I am living in downtown Melbourne, Australia, a sharp contrast to the slow living of Vancouver Island. The first two weeks of my journey were spent in surf towns and definitely eased me into my new life here in Australia. These funky towns are something that feels familiar to me; I spent the two weeks visiting friends who have moved here. I think without that support, I would’ve definitely felt a lot more homesick. Study Abroad Destination: Japan

To say my arrival in Japan last September was a culture shock would be an understatement, but with that it has also been a breath of fresh air. Instead of the usual beer and fireworks, my New Years in Japan consisted of joining the crowds of nearly 100 million nationwide in Hatsumode, the New Years tradition of visiting a shrine to pray for good fortune in the coming year. I have been ushered through a multitude of towering temples, finely crafted gardens, and phenomenal food.
