As I sign off on my time being a Writer-in-Residence for BC Study Abroad, I am thankful for this opportunity to reflect, so profoundly, about my travel abroad. This prolonged self-reflection has allowed for a soul-searching that yielded more meaning-making than I could have ever anticipated. It was Andrew Solomon who once said to overcome adversity, one must “forge meaning and build identity.”

Of course, on many levels, what I had experienced cannot be construed as adversity. But I would argue that if one is generous about the sheer amount of toll a body must undergo in the experience of exhaustion and loneli...

Carol Chen is currently a first-year marketing management student at British Columbia Institute of Technology. When Carol was in high school, she enrolled in a class for marketing and immediately fell in love with the idea of rebranding a service or product to make it more unique. Today, she continues to be the person coming up with creative ideas whether it is for school projects, for the marketing association, and even at her job as a social media coordinator. Charlotte Telfer-Wan, Simon Fraser University, winner of the BC Study Abroad: Stories from Abroad Scholarship

Charlotte Telfer-Wan is a university student and dance artist from the small town of Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. She is currently studying Contemporary Dance and Sport Science at the University of Auckland in New Zealand on an academic exchange from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. Before attending university Charlotte has spent 14 years of her childhood dancing ballet, jazz, and modern. Her passion for dance encouraged her to continue studying and performing.
